Biography of James Daniel May
Early Life and EducationJames Daniel May, an English journalist, was born in Bristol. He grew up with three siblings: an older sister, Jane, a younger sister, Sarah, and a brother. His maternal ancestors were Armenian immigrants from Iran. During his childhood, his family frequently moved around the country. He attended Caerleon Infant School near Newport in South Wales and later Oakwood Comprehensive School in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. Coincidentally, Jeremy Clarkson, his future co-host on Top Gear, also began his journalism career in the same town. May also attended the school with actor Dean Andrews, known for his roles in "Life on Mars" and "Ashes to Ashes." As a child, May was a chorister at the Usk Parish Church School. He was a talented flutist and pianist and later studied music at Lancaster University, where he was a member of Pendle College.
Career in Journalism and Television
In the early 1980s, May worked as an editorial assistant at The Engineer and later at Autocar magazine. He wrote for several publications, including a regular column in CAR magazine called "England Made Me," articles for Top Gear magazine, and a weekly column in The Daily Telegraph. In 2000, he won the "Journalist of the Year" award. May has written several books, including "May on Cars," a collection of his articles, and "Oz and James's Big Wine Adventure," co-authored based on the TV series of the same name. He has also written an afterword for the final book by motoring legend L. J. K. Setright, "The Long Road with Bumps." In addition to his writing, May has appeared in various television programs. He was a presenter on the show "Driven" on Channel 4 from 1998 to 1999 and a co-host on the eighth series of the BBC 1 show "Reckless Driving School." May has also hosted his own programs, such as "James May's Top Toys," where he explores his childhood toys. He has appeared as a guest on cooking shows, including "Ready Steady Cook," and competed against Gordon Ramsay on "The F-Word" and "Celebrity Challenge." May has been a co-presenter on the popular show Top Gear since 1999. He has also hosted documentary series such as "James May's 20th Century" and "James May's Man Lab," where he aims to revive lost skills of modern men. May has a passion for classic cars and owns several vehicles, including a Rolls-Royce Corniche, a Jaguar XJS, and a Ferrari F430. He is known for his careful driving style and was given the nickname "Captain Slow" on Top Gear. However, this has not stopped him from reaching high speeds, such as when he drove a Bugatti Veyron at its maximum speed of 407 km/h. May has also taken part in various expeditions, including being part of the first team to reach the North Magnetic Pole by car. He currently resides in Hammersmith, West London, with his partner, dance critic Sarah Frater.
