James Buchanan Duke, an American industrialist, is best known for his innovations in the cigarette manufacturing technology and marketing in the tobacco industry.

Early Life

James Buchanan Duke was born on December 23, 1856, near Durham, North Carolina. He was the son of Washington Duke and Artelia Roney Duke. His father owned a tobacco company, which James and his brother, Benjamin Newton Duke, later took over.

Revolutionizing the Tobacco Industry

In 1885, James acquired the rights to the first effective cigarette rolling machine invented by James Albert Bonsack. By the 1890s, Duke's company supplied 40% of the American cigarette market. In 1890, he merged with his four main competitors, forming the American Tobacco Company, which became a monopoly in the American cigarette market.

Expansion and Influence

In the early 1900s, Duke expanded his influence to the British market, forcing British manufacturers to merge into the Imperial Tobacco Company of Great Britain and Ireland. In 1906, the American Tobacco Company was found guilty of antitrust violations, leading to its breakup into three separate companies: American Tobacco Company, Liggett and Myers, and P. Lorillard Company.

Business Ventures

In 1892, Duke opened his first textile mill in Durham, which was managed by his brother Benjamin. He also established a development company in the early 1900s to acquire land and water rights from the Catawba River. This led to the creation of Catawba Power and later the Duke Power, which supplied electricity to textile factories and various industrial enterprises.

Later Life and Legacy

In 1911, the Supreme Court upheld the dissolution of the American Tobacco Company monopoly. After the breakup, Duke retained control of the British-American Tobacco Company. James Duke was married twice. His first marriage to Lillian Fletcher McCredy in 1904 ended in divorce in 1906. In 1907, he married Nanaline Holt Inman, with whom he had a daughter named Doris.

James Duke passed away on October 10, 1925, in New York City. He was buried alongside his father and brother on the campus of Duke University. His estate was divided, with half going to the Duke Endowment fund and $100 million being left to his daughter Doris, making her the wealthiest girl in the world at the time.
