Biography of James Gardner March

James Gardner March, born in 1928 in Cleveland, Ohio, is an Honorary Professor at Stanford University, where he has been teaching since 1970. He is renowned for his research in the field of organization and the organizational decision-making process. March is also the author of nine books of poetry and several films.

March earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Wisconsin and his doctorate from Yale University. He has gained significant respect for developing a broad theoretical approach that combines psychological theories with other behavioral sciences. As a prominent advocate of the Carnegie School, an intellectual movement in the 1950s and 1960s, he collaborated with cognitive psychologist Herbert Simon, resulting in several works on organization theory.

March is also known for his prolific work on the behavioral approach within the theory of the firm, alongside Richard Cyert in 1963. In 1972, March worked with Johan P. Olsen and Michael D. Cohen on the system-anarchic approach to organizational decision-making, known as the "Garbage Can Model."

His research focuses on understanding how decisions are made by individuals, groups, organizations, companies, and society. March investigates factors that influence decision-making, including risk orientation, leadership, uncertainty of the present and past, politics, and corporate interests of stakeholders. He also explores issues related to consultation, organizational and individual learning, and the balance between research and exploitation in organizations.

As a teacher and educator himself, James March's research also covers various aspects of university leadership and other pedagogical problems. He interacts and communicates using various forms, such as books, articles, interactive seminars, films, and even poetry.
