Biography of James Heckman
James Joseph Heckman, a renowned American economist, is recognized as one of the top ten most influential economists in the world. Born on April 19, 1944, in Chicago, Illinois, he is the son of John Jacob Heckman and Bernice Irene Medley. Heckman earned a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from Colorado College and a Ph.D. in Economics from Princeton University in 1971.
Academic Career
Heckman started his academic career as an assistant professor at Columbia University before moving to the University of Chicago in 1973, where he currently holds the position of a distinguished professor of economics. In addition to his role as a distinguished professor, Heckman is also the director of the Economic Research Center at the University of Chicago. He has also served as a professor at the University College London and the University College Dublin.
Nobel Prize and Contributions
In 2000, Heckman was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics along with Daniel McFadden for their groundbreaking work in econometrics and microeconomics. He has written over 270 articles and several books, focusing on the analysis of self-selection and the effectiveness of preschool education programs. Heckman's research has been instrumental in developing the scientific foundations for evaluating economic policies and understanding the complexities of heterogeneous and counterfactual situations.
Current Research and Social Experiments
Heckman's recent research has focused on issues of inequality, human development, and the formation of knowledge, skills, and abilities throughout the lifecycle. He has dedicated significant attention to monitoring the economics of early childhood education and is currently conducting new social experiments in early childhood interventions. Heckman also investigates the processes and causes of the emergence of lower social strata in the United States and Western Europe.
Personal Life
James Heckman is married to sociologist Lynn Pettler-Heckman, and they have two children. Their son Jonathan, who became a physicist, was born in 1982, and their daughter Alma, a recipient of a Fulbright educational grant, was born in 1986.
