Biography of James Hilton
James Hilton was an English writer and the recipient of the "Oscar" award. He was the author of several bestsellers, including "Lost Horizon" (which introduced readers to the lost world of Shangri-La) and "Goodbye, Mr. Chips".
Early Life
James Hilton was born in the United Kingdom. His father, John Hilton, was the headmaster of Chapel End School in Walthamstow. It was his father who served as the inspiration for the character of Mr. Chipping in "Goodbye, Mr. Chips".
Writing Career
Hilton wrote two of his most famous books, "Lost Horizon" and "Goodbye, Mr. Chips", while living in a typical two-bedroom house on Oak Hill Gardens in Woodford Green. The house still stands today, with a blue plaque commemorating Hilton's residence.
From the mid-1930s onwards, Hilton lived and worked in Hollywood. He received an Oscar in 1942 for his work on the screenplay for "Mrs. Miniver".
Personal Life
James Hilton was married and divorced twice. His first wife was Alice Brown, and his second wife was Galina Kopineck. He passed away in Long Beach from liver cancer.
