Babrios, the Greek Fabulist

Early Life and Origins

Babrios (1st century CE), a Greek fabulist, is believed to have been of Italian descent. While his exact birthplace is uncertain, it is possible that he lived in Syria.

Literary Style and Influences

Babrios wrote fables in "limping iambics" (choliambs), a literary form characterized by its irregular meter. He drew inspiration from the fables of Aesop and other sources, incorporating novelistic and anecdotal elements into his works.

Preserved Works

Out of the original ten (or possibly two) books of fables, only 143 have survived. These fables are written in a colloquial and somewhat vulgar dialect, heavily influenced by Ionic elements.

Legacy and Influence

By the 3rd century CE, Babrios' fables had become established as a classic text for school education. His works continue to be appreciated for their wit, humor, and moral teachings.
