Biography of James Logan Jones Jr.
James Logan Jones Jr. is a former United States Marine Corps general and was the National Security Advisor to the President of the United States. He was born in France and is fluent in French.
Education and Military Career
Jones graduated from the International School of the Georgetown University in 1966, earning a Bachelor of Science degree. After completing his education, he joined the U.S. military and served as a commander of a Marine Corps battalion in Vietnam. During his time in Vietnam, he participated in 147 combat operations in both Vietnam and Laos.
Political and Career Success
Following his military service, Jones embarked on a successful political and military career. He gained his first political experience as a representative of the Marine Corps in the United States Senate in the late 1970s to early 1980s.
In the early 1990s, Jones was appointed as the Chief of Staff of the Joint Task Force in Europe. He played a crucial role in peacekeeping operations in Bosnia, Herzegovina, and Macedonia.
After his time in Europe, Jones returned to Washington and became an Assistant Secretary of Defense under William Cohen. Cohen, a former Republican senator, led the Department of Defense during President Bill Clinton's second term.
In 1999, Jones was appointed as the Commandant of the Marine Corps, one of the highest-ranking positions in the U.S. military.
NATO Supreme Allied Commander
In 2003, President George W. Bush appointed Jones as the Commander of the United States European Command and Supreme Allied Commander Europe, making him responsible for NATO's operations in 91 countries, including Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
