Biography of James R. Longacre

James R. Longacre is an American operatic tenor who has had a successful career in both opera and teaching. He has performed in a wide repertoire of operas and oratorios, including "Candide," "The Magic Flute," "La Cenerentola," "La Bohème," "Italian Girl in Algiers," "The Tales of Hoffmann," "Abduction from the Seraglio," "Gianni Schicchi," "Carmen," and "Madama Butterfly."

Operatic Performances

Longacre has graced the stages of renowned opera houses and theaters, including the Metropolitan Opera, Opera Company of Philadelphia, The Pennsylvania Opera Theater, Opera Delaware, Lake George Opera, and Chattanooga Opera. He has also had the opportunity to perform with the Knoxville Opera, Opera Omaha, Michigan Opera Theater, and The Hilton Head Symphony from South Carolina.

His talent gained recognition when he participated in a masterclass with Placido Domingo, which was broadcasted on PBS. During the masterclass, Longacre performed the famous aria "Una furtiva lagrima" from Donizetti's opera "L'Elisir d'Amore." Domingo praised Longacre for his beautiful voice.

Other Pursuits

In addition to his operatic career, Longacre also gained popularity among hockey fans in Philadelphia during the 1990s. He became known as the "Singing Voice of the Philadelphia Flyers," the local hockey team.

Longacre has also made appearances at sporting events, such as the Stanley Cup, and has performed in several plays at the Walnut Street Theater and Wilma Theater in Philadelphia. In recognition of his achievements, he received "The Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award" from his alma mater, Milton Hershey School, in March 2005.

After retiring from his active singing career, Longacre turned to teaching. He has worked at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, his former school, and several other schools. He was also a finalist in Luciano Pavarotti's "Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition" and The Opera Company of Boston Vocal Competition in the 1980s.
