Biography of James Root
Early Life and Musical BeginningsJames Root is a musician and guitarist known for his work in the American bands "Slipknot" and "Stone Sour". Growing up, James had limited interaction with his parents as they worked around the clock. This led him to spend a significant amount of time alone at home. Without role models, his friends became his inspiration. At the age of 13, his mother bought him his first guitar, a Memphis, for Christmas.
Atomic Opera and Stone Sour
James' first band was Atomic Opera, where he played alongside ex-Stone Sour member Bruce Swink. In 1995, James left Atomic Opera to join Stone Sour. However, in 1997, Stone Sour's vocalist Corey Taylor decided to leave the band and become the new frontman for Slipknot. As a result, Stone Sour disbanded without finding a replacement for Corey.
Deadfront and Return to Slipknot
After the breakup of Stone Sour, James joined the band Deadfront, which included members Sean Economaki, Danny Spain, Arron Peltz, and Max Hudson. Deadfront released an album called "Nemesis". However, James left the band at the end of 1998 when Slipknot's guitarist Josh Brainard decided to depart. James replaced him and joined Slipknot during the recording of their debut album, where he played on the song "Purity". James was the last member to join Slipknot, and the band's lineup remained unchanged since then.
Success with Slipknot and Stone Sour
Slipknot quickly gained recognition and released several albums. By 2001, the band was on the brink of breaking up, and James Root, along with Corey Taylor, decided to revive Stone Sour. This project proved to be successful, with their debut album selling half a million copies. Stone Sour, like Slipknot, was nominated for a Grammy award.
Continued Success and Personal Life
After their return to Slipknot, James and Corey released the band's third album, "Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses". Following a two-year tour, they once again focused on Stone Sour. In 2006, Stone Sour released their second album, which was even more successful than their debut.
Currently, James is in a relationship with Christina Scabbia, the vocalist of Lacuna Coil. In Slipknot, James adopted the clown mask previously worn by a former guitarist, Josh. He later customized it by painting it white and adding a lightning bolt instead of a mouth. Standing at 198 cm, James is the tallest member of the band, although many mistakenly believe Mick Thomson to be taller. His natural hair color is brown, but he often dyes it. James considers Iron Maiden to be the greatest metal band of all time, and his favorite horror film is "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre".
In his own words, James describes himself as "big, dumb, and mute". He has a lively personality and enjoys entertaining those around him. In his free time, James likes to go fishing, play video games, and build model cars and planes.
His nickname, Peach, was inspired by the film "James and The Giant Peach". Before joining the band, he worked as a waiter and once said, "I hated that dirty job". James has a great love for the songs of Iron Maiden and Metallica, with his favorite tracks being "Damage Inc" by Metallica and "Aces High" by Iron Maiden.
James primarily uses a Fender Flat-Head Telecaster in Matte Black with EMG 81/60 pickups and plays in Drop B tuning. He also uses a Fender Flat-Head Telecaster in Matte Black with EMG 81/60 pickups for the song "The Heretic Anthem" in Drop A tuning on the album "Iowa". His backup guitar is a Fender Flat-Head Stratocaster in Matte Black with EMG 81/60 pickups, featuring the initials "JR" (Jim Root?) on the 12th fret. He uses Ernie Ball 11-58 gauge strings for his main guitars and Ernie Ball 12-64 gauge strings for the Drop A tuning.
