Biography of James Tolkan
James Stuart Tolkan was born on June 20, 1931, in Calumet, Michigan. His mother, Marjorie Tolkan, and his father, Ralph M. Tolkan, was a cattle industry executive.
James studied at the University of Iowa, Coe College, the Actors Studio in New York, and Eastern Arizona College. Throughout his career, Tolkan became well-known for portraying strict, authoritative, and bald figures on screen.
Roles in "Back to the Future"
One of his most recognizable roles was Gerald Strickland in the film "Back to the Future" (1985). He played the stern and authoritarian principal of Valley High School, who held a special dislike for Marty McFly and his father.
Tolkan reprised his role as Strickland in the sequel, "Back to the Future Part II" (1989), engaging in a shootout with members of an unnamed gang. In the alternative reality of 1985 portrayed in the second film, Strickland's school was destroyed in 1979.
Finally, in 1990, Tolkan portrayed Mr. Strickland's grandfather, the sheriff of Hill Valley, in "Back to the Future Part III."
Other Notable Roles
Aside from his roles in the "Back to the Future" trilogy, Tolkan played an FBI Agent in the sci-fi thriller "WarGames" and a serious officer in the Oscar-winning film "Top Gun" starring Tom Cruise. He portrayed the cold and relentless district attorney Polito in Sidney Lumet's crime drama "Prince of the City" (1981). Tolkan also played Detective Lubik in the sci-fi action film "Masters of the Universe" (1987).
In addition to his film work, Tolkan appeared in several television series, often in guest roles. He featured in shows such as "Naked City," "Remington Steele," "Miami Vice," and "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air." In the series "A Nero Wolfe Mystery," Tolkan not only played multiple roles but also directed two episodes.
