Early Life and EducationMira Furlan was born in Zagreb, Croatia (then Yugoslavia), to parents who were professors at the University of Zagreb. She studied at the University of Zagreb, majoring in English and French, and later graduated from the Zagreb Academy of Dramatic Art.
Theatre and Film Career
After graduating, Furlan joined the Croatian National Theatre, where she performed until 1991. She made her film debut in 1977's "Cross the River If You Can," and appeared in several Yugoslavian television shows. In 1985, she starred in Emir Kusturica's film "When Father Was Away on Business," which won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
International Success
In the United States, Furlan appeared on stage in Los Angeles and released several music albums, including "Songs From Movies That Have Never Been Made" and "1000 years ago in Yugoslavia." She is best known for her roles as Minbari Ambassador Delenn in the science fiction series "Babylon 5" and as Danielle Rousseau in the ABC series "Lost."
Return to Croatia and Serbia
After emigrating to the US in 1991, Furlan returned to Croatia in 2002 and played the lead role in a film directed by Rade Serbedzija. In 2008, she returned to Serbia to star in the TV series "Storks Will Return," directed by her husband, Goran Gajic.
Personal Life and Legacy
Furlan was married to Serbian director Goran Gajic, who played a significant role in her career. They had a son, Marko Lav Gajic, born in 1998. Furlan was known for her feminist activism and her outspoken views on politics. She passed away in 2021, leaving behind a legacy of memorable performances and inspiring creativity.
