Early Life and Education
Victor Gbeho was born in Ghana and pursued his legal education, eventually becoming a prominent jurist and diplomat.
Career at the United Nations
Gbeho served as Ghana's Permanent Representative to the United Nations for numerous years. In July 1994, he was appointed by the UN Secretary-General as Special Representative to Somalia.
Diplomatic Roles within ECOWAS
In September 1995, then-ECOWAS Chairman Jerry Rawlings appointed Gbeho as ECOWAS Special Representative for Liberia. Subsequently, Gbeho held the position of Ghanaian Minister of Foreign Affairs during the final term of President Jerry Rawlings (1997-2001).
Political Career in Ghana
Gbeho also served as a Member of Parliament from January 2001 to January 2005. During the presidency of John Mills, he acted as an advisor on foreign policy.
ECOWAS Presidency
On February 16, 2010, Gbeho was elected President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, a position he held until March 1, 2012.
