Jan Herman van der Vegt
Early Life and EducationJan Herman van der Vegt was a renowned Dutch conductor who studied at the Cologne Conservatory. He made his debut as a violist with the Amsterdam Orchestra conducted by Wilhelm Stumpff.
Professional Career
Van der Vegt initially led small musical groups in provincial Dutch cities. In 1889, he founded the Arnhemse Orkest Vereniging (now the Arnhem Philharmonic Orchestra) in Arnhem, directing it until 1893. He then worked in Warsaw and Lodz, Poland.
Upon his return to the Netherlands in December 1896, van der Vegt debuted as a conductor at the Netherlands Opera. For the next two seasons, he conducted acclaimed productions of operas by Mozart, Verdi, Gounod, Delibes, Wagner, Mascagni, Brüll, and Kienzl.
Subsequent Engagements
Van der Vegt held various positions with opera companies in Amsterdam and Antwerp. From 1904 to 1910, he returned to Arnhem as conductor of the orchestra and the male choir "Aurora." In 1910, he became the Chief Conductor of opera and operetta at Amsterdam's Rembrandt Theatre, a position he held until his retirement.
