Education and Early Career
Josef Bočan graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at the Czech Technical University in Prague in 1962. He initially worked at the Constructiva workshop before co-founding the Beta architectural studio with Jan Šrámek in the 1960s as part of the "Sdružení projektových ateliérů" association. Beta aimed to challenge the dominance of state institutions and promote quality workshops.
Architectural Landmarks
Through successful architectural competitions, Bočan gained significant projects such as the Czechoslovak Embassy in London, the InterContinental Hotel in Prague, and other foreign commissions. His works include the new Prague Main Station (co-authored since the 1970s), the InterContinental Hotel in Prague, embassies in London, Brasília, Stockholm, and Tbilisi, as well as interiors for a shopping center in Moscow, a insurance company in Liberec, and the Ministry of Construction in Prague-Nusle.
Return to Czech Republic and Academic Career
In 1989, Bočan returned to the Czech Republic and became head of the studio at the Faculty of Architecture. He established his own studio, Bočan & Partners, which he led until his death. From 1999, he served as head of the Institute of Design I. Later, he became Chairman of the Academic Senate of the Faculty of Architecture.
Recognition and Legacy
In 2005, Bočan received the title of Professor honoris causa from the University of Tbilisi. In 2006, he was appointed Professor by the President of the Czech Republic. In 2009-2010, he developed joint educational projects with Georgia and collaborated with universities in France, Germany, the United States, and Colombia.
