Biography of Sergey Shmakov
Sergey Pavlovich Shmakov is an acclaimed architect from Russia. He was born on April 15, 1937, in Feodosia, Crimea. Since 1937, he has been residing in Saint Petersburg. Shmakov completed his education at the Academy of Arts of the USSR, where he first attended the Secondary Art School (1956), followed by the Architecture Faculty of the Repin Institute (1962). He also studied at the Faculty of Architecture of the Prague Polytechnic Institute in Czechoslovakia from 1958 to 1960.
Early Career
From 1962 to 1965, Shmakov worked at the Lengiprogor Design Institute, where he was involved in urban planning projects. Some notable works from this period include the layout design of town centers in Bugulma (Tatarstan), Khabarovsk, and Vladivostok, as well as the master plan for the city of Bolshoi Kamen in the Russian Far East.
Work at LenNIIproekt
Since 1965, Shmakov has been working at AO "LenNIIproekt," the leading design firm responsible for designing and constructing projects in Saint Petersburg. In 1989, he became the head of Design Workshop No. 3, specializing in sports and recreational facilities. Today, the workshop handles projects of various profiles in civil construction due to market conditions.
Notable Projects
Throughout his career, Shmakov has completed approximately 100 architectural works, including buildings and projects. Some notable examples of his built projects include a 140-seat kindergarten in the historical center of the city, a children's sports school, a residential complex with kindergartens, and the complex of the new Saint Petersburg Television Center in the northern part of the city. He has also designed residential quarters in the Moscow district and near Lake Dolgoe. Currently, he is involved in the construction of the Small Stage of the A.S. Pushkin Academic Theater and a residential building with 150 apartments in the suburb of Saint Petersburg - the city of Pushkin. Among his unrealized projects are the roof structures of the main stands at the Petrovsky and Kirovsky stadiums, a puppet theater in Vyborg, and a dozen sports facilities designed during the city's bid for the 2004 Olympic Games.
Recognition and Contributions
Shmakov has participated in numerous national and international architectural competitions. Some recent examples include the development of Varna city in Bulgaria, the Lapland Museum in Rovaniemi, Finland, the port terminal in Yokohama, Japan, and the development of the center of New Belgrade, Yugoslavia. He has also authored around fifty publications on architecture in the press, as well as radio and television appearances, and has written screenplays for television programs on the architecture of the city.
Affiliations
Sergey Pavlovich Shmakov is a member of the Secretariat of the Board of the Saint Petersburg Union of Architects and a member of the Presidium of the Board of the Union of Architects of Russia. He also serves as the Deputy Chairman of the Saint Petersburg Licensing Center.
