Early Life and Education

Jan Vondrouš was born on January 24, 1884, in the Czech village of Hotoušice. In 1893, he immigrated to the United States with his family and received his artistic training there. He studied under James David Smillie for four years at the National School of Design (later the National Academy of Design) in New York City and graduated from the school of etching. Subsequently, Vondrouš worked as an illustrator for American weeklies for several years.

Artistic Journey in Prague and Europe

In 1910, Vondrouš relocated to Prague and produced numerous engravings, etchings, and other graphic works, primarily depicting urban architecture. During World War I, he published his early etchings, which predominantly featured the architecture of New York City and its surroundings. After the war, he traveled extensively throughout Europe for about a decade, creating architectural landscapes of major European cities, notably Bruges and Venice. Vondrouš maintained a home and studio in Long Island during this period.

Return to Prague and Artistic Focus

In 1929, Vondrouš returned to Prague and spent his later years etching and drawing the people and architecture of the city. His etchings garnered medals at international exhibitions. He was a member of the Czech Graphic Arts Association Hollar, the Chicago Society of Etchers, and the California Society of Etchers.

Artistic Legacy and Impact

Jan Vondrouš's works are held in the collections of the National Gallery in Prague, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the New York Public Library, the Berlin Kupferstichkabinett, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. He died on June 28, 1970, in Prague.

Philatelic Contributions

Vondrouš designed several postage stamps for Czechoslovakia and the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. He debuted in this capacity in 1937, creating the designs for Czechoslovakia's "Little Entente" stamp series (Michel #375-376). A stamp from this series was reproduced on the Czech miniature sheet "Traditions of Czech Postage Stamps" (Michel #346) issued in 2003.
