Jan Hajek is a Czech professional tennis player who began his career in 2000. In the same year, he won his first Futures tournament by defeating Johan Ortegren in the final. From 2000 to 2003, Hajek primarily competed in Futures tournaments but eventually made his way up to the Challenger level. By the end of 2005, he had already won eight Futures tournaments, all of which took place on his favorite surface, clay.
Hajek's breakthrough came in 2006 when he started the year ranked 352nd and finished at 76th. It all began with a victory at the Challenger tournament in Barletta. In May, Jan reached the final of the Challenger in Prague, where he lost to his compatriot Robin Vik. Throughout the year, Hajek won three more Challengers, dominating in Poznan, defeating Tomas Berdych in Prostejov, and triumphing over Fernando Vicente in Braunschweig. In the same year, he made his first appearance in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament, the US Open, and secured his first victory.
In 2007, Hajek's overall performance was less successful. However, he reached the third round of the French Open, setting a personal record in a Grand Slam event. His relatively weak results were attributed to health problems, including a shoulder injury and heart issues.
At the beginning of 2009, Hajek was ranked 474th and primarily competed in Challenger tournaments. He gradually regained his lost positions due to injury. It started with a semifinal appearance in Athens, where he lost to Rui Machado. Hajek then achieved a brilliant victory at the Challenger Championship in Ostrava. He followed it up with another win in Prostejov, defeating Ivan Ljubicic in the quarterfinals and Steve Darcis in the final. His third victory of the year came in Freudenstadt, where he defeated Laurent Recouderc in the final. In the same year, Hajek made his debut in the Davis Cup representing the Czech national team, competing in the semifinals against Croatia and the final against Rafael Nadal. By the end of the 2009 season, his ranking had risen to 103rd.
In 2010, Jan returned to the Grand Slam level, defeating Robbie Ginepri at the Australian Open before losing to Mikhail Youzhny. Shortly after, he reached the quarterfinals of the ATP tournament in Munich, where he faced Youzhny once again. Hajek became the first player to win the Prostejov Challenger three times, although Radek Stepanek's illness played a role in his victory in the last round.
Currently, Jan Hajek has won nine Challenger and nine Futures tournaments, with his focus in recent years being on the Challenger series. In the singles category of Grand Slam tournaments, Hajek has never advanced beyond the third round, and in doubles, he has only reached the second round. His personal best ranking in singles was 71st, and he is currently ranked 84th in the world.
