Early Life and Education
Jean Marie Constant Duhamel was born on December 19, 1797, in Saint-Malo, France. His early studies were interrupted by political events, but he eventually enrolled in the École Polytechnique in 1816. However, he was forced to leave the school due to political circumstances.
Academic Career
After leaving the École Polytechnique, Duhamel turned his attention to teaching. He became a professor at the Sorbonne in 1834, and at the École Polytechnique in 1840. He remained at the École Polytechnique until shortly before his death.
Mathematical Contributions
Duhamel made significant contributions to mathematical physics, particularly in the following areas:
Theory of vibrations: He studied the vibrations of strings, membranes, and rods.
Heat diffusion: He developed equations to describe the propagation of heat in solids, considering the effects of temperature changes.
Elasticity: He derived the equations of elasticity, taking into account changes in temperature.
Education Reform
Duhamel also played an important role in reforming mathematical education. In 1840-1841, he published "Cours d'analyse de l'École polytechnique," which presented the foundations of calculus with unprecedented rigor and clarity. This textbook had a profound influence on the teaching of mathematics in France and beyond.
Later Years
Towards the end of his career, Duhamel published "Des Méthodes dans les sciences du raisonnement" (1866-1872), a comprehensive treatise on the methods of mathematical reasoning. He passed away on May 14, 1872, in Paris, France.
Honors and Recognition
Duhamel's contributions to mathematics were widely recognized. He was elected to the Académie des Sciences in 1840, and his textbooks were translated into several languages. He also received numerous awards, including the Grand Prix for Mathematics from the Académie des Sciences in 1858.
