Every year, she eagerly visits the Cango Wildlife Ranch in South Africa, where she forms a special bond with Nile crocodiles named Hannibal, Marbaker, and Sue. Martin enters a large steel cage and submerges herself in a pond teeming with these dangerous predators. She describes her reptilian friends as not just creatures, but as beautiful personalities.

Close Encounters with Crocodiles

At the Cango Wildlife Ranch, all tourists have the opportunity to get up close and personal with crocodiles from the safety of a protective cage. The cylindrical cage is lowered into the water using a crane, and although no food is used to attract the crocodiles, they usually gather to observe those who dare disturb their tranquility. Janet Martin, who has observed these courageous individuals getting nose-to-nose with the crocodiles, eventually became infected with their enthusiasm. She explains, "When you spend so much time with people who love something, their passion rubs off on you."

Safe Dives with Crocodiles

Nile crocodiles can reach lengths of 4-5 meters and weigh around 410 kg, although some individuals can grow up to 6.1 meters and weigh 900 kg. These opportunistic predators can adapt to almost any food source, whether it be fish, reptiles, or mammals. Despite the potential risks, the Cango Wildlife Ranch has had no unpleasant incidents during dives. The lifting crane is equipped with a double-chain system, and the cage provides safety from the inside. All systems undergo regular inspections. Tammy Moult assures that dives only occur when the crocodiles are satiated. Recently, three elderly and almost immobile crocodiles were replaced by four curious newcomers who eagerly explore and gain new experiences. Martin acknowledges, "You know that nothing can harm you because you are inside the cage. Although if you stick your hand out, you might lose it."
