Biography of Janine Shepherd

Janine Shepherd, a former Australian athlete, was born in New South Wales, Australia. From a young age, she showed a talent for sports and won several national championships in athletics at the age of 10. Later, she decided to focus on cross-country skiing and began training in the sport.

A Tragic Accident

After years of training and victories, Janine Shepherd was preparing for the 1988 Winter Olympics. In 1986, she was scheduled to go to Calgary for Olympic preparations. However, tragedy struck when she was involved in a horrific accident while cycling in the Blue Mountains, her home state of New South Wales. The accident left her with severe injuries, including a broken neck, back, legs, collarbone, ribs, and internal organs. She also lost a significant amount of blood. Doctors initially feared for her life.

Despite the pain and fear, Janine Shepherd refused to give up. Her competitive nature and drive for victory in sports taught her to strive for success in all aspects of life. She initially tried to deny the reality of her injuries, but eventually accepted the harsh truth and decided to move forward.

Shepherd's journey to recovery was long and challenging. Doctors predicted that she would spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair, but her determination proved them wrong. She not only learned to walk again but also obtained a pilot's license. Janine Shepherd got married and became a mother of three children. Her book "Never Tell Me Never" became a bestseller, and she went on to write three more books: "Dare To Fly" (1998), "Reaching For Stars" (1998), and "On My Own Two Feet" (2007).

Inspiring Others

Janine Shepherd became a renowned motivational speaker and lecturer, sharing her inspiring story with audiences worldwide. In 1998, she was recognized as an "Outstanding Young Person of the World," and in 2000, she carried the Olympic torch at the Sydney Paralympic Games. Currently, she resides in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, where she continues to conduct motivational seminars and lectures.

A Life of Fulfillment

In 2001, Janine Shepherd received the Order of Australia for her organizational work in the "Australasian Spinal Research Trust." She no longer regrets the fateful day in 1986 when her life was shattered by an accident. Janine believes that her new life is more fulfilling and meaningful than it was before. She states, "Living for someone, giving something to others, makes life much more complete – it is more than an Olympic medal."
