Colonel and General Jānis Balodis

Early Career

Born in 1881, Jānis Balodis began his military service in 1888 as a volunteer in the 97th Livonian Regiment of the Imperial Russian Army (RIA). In 1910, he was transferred to the 178th Vendenskii Regiment in Liepāja.

World War I

During World War I, Balodis rose through the ranks, serving as commander of the 217th Kovrovsky Regiment from 1917.

Latvian Army

After Latvia's declaration of independence in 1918, Balodis joined the Latvian Army and became the commander of the 6th Riga Rifle Regiment. In 1920, he was appointed commander of the 2nd Vidzeme Division, a position he held until 1924.

Promotion to General

In 1921, Balodis was promoted to the rank of General, recognizing his leadership and contributions to the Latvian Army.
