Biography of Janis Carter

Janis Carter, born Janis Dremann, was an American actress of the 1940s and 1950s. She was born in 1913 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. After graduating from Mather College in Cleveland with a degree in music and art, Janis moved to New York, aspiring to become an opera singer. In 1937, she landed a role on Broadway in the production of 'Virginia'. The following year, she appeared in 'I Married an Angel' and soon after, she made her way to Hollywood.

Janis made her film debut in 1941 in the comedic melodrama 'Cadet Girl'. By 1942, she had signed a contract with 20th Century Fox and appeared in films such as the war detective film 'Secret Agent of Japan', the action film 'Who Is Hope Schuyler?', and the screen adaptation of 'I Married an Angel'. She remained in Hollywood for 12 years and appeared in over 30 films during that time.

In 1947, Janis starred in the US-Italy collaboration drama 'Addio Mimi!' and in 1948, she appeared in the film noir 'I Love Trouble'. In 1950, she could be seen in the comedy 'A Woman of Distinction' directed by Edward Buzzell, and in 1951, she landed the lead role in the western 'Santa Fe' alongside the great actor Randolph Scott.

Janis Carter's last film role was in the 1962 wild-west comedy 'Wild Gals of the Naked West' directed by Russ Meyer. Her television career included projects such as 'Willys Theatre Presenting Ben Hecht's Tales of the City', 'Suspense', 'The Elgin Hour', and several others. In 1954, Carter hosted the show 'Feather Your Nest' on NBC, co-hosting with Bud Collyer.

In 1942, Janis married Carl Prager, but they divorced in 1951. In 1956, she married Julius Stulman, with whom she remained for the rest of her life. Janis Carter lived to be 80 years old and passed away from a heart attack on July 30, 1994, in Durham, North Carolina.
