Early Life and Education
Born in Nēreta, Latvia, on July 24, 1923, Jānis Kubilis was raised in a theater-loving family. He excelled in sports, particularly basketball. After working at a dairy factory, Kubilis attended a technical school in Daugavpils and later served as a laboratory technician.
Performing Career
Kubilis's passion for the arts led him to the Latvian National Theater, where he trained as an actor under Vera Balun. From 1947 to 1994, he graced the stage, embodying over 140 roles characterized by intelligence, romance, and humor.
Recognition and Awards
Kubilis's talent earned him the accolades of critics and audiences alike. In 1956, he became a Merited Artist of the Latvian SSR, and in 1966, he received the title of People's Artist of the Latvian SSR.
Film Career
Kubilis made his cinematic debut in 1956 and went on to star in numerous films, including "The Fisherman's Son," "Sword and Rose," and "Underground." His most iconic role was as the head of the Czech secret service in the 1985 detective "Match Will Be Played in Any Weather."
Personal Life
Kubilis found love in the theater. His wife, Lilija Daugavieta, was also an actress who trained alongside him at the Riga Drama Theater Studio. They remained devoted to each other until Kubilis's passing on June 16, 2024.
