Early Career and Olympic Silver
1986-2008Janis Strenga was born on February 5, 1986, in Sigulda, Latvia. He began his competitive bobsled career in 2008, joining the Latvian national team as a brakeman.
Breakthrough at Junior Level
2009-2010In 2009, Strenga participated in the World Junior Championships in Königssee, Germany, finishing fifth in the four-man event. He made his European Cup debut the following year, finishing 15th in the two-man event and 14th and 8th in the two-man and four-man events at the World Junior Championships, respectively.
Setbacks and Success
2011-2012After failing to qualify for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Strenga endured a period of setbacks, competing in less prestigious events. However, he won his first European Cup medal, a silver in the four-man event, in 2011. He also made his World Cup debut and finished 14th at the World Championships in Königssee.
In 2012, Strenga triumphed at the World Junior Championships in Igls, winning gold in both the two-man and four-man events. He also competed at the World Championships in Lake Placid but was forced to withdraw after two runs.
World Cup Success and Olympic Glory
2013-2014Strenga's breakthrough came in 2013 when he won his first World Cup medal, a bronze in Winterberg. He consistently finished in the top 10 in other World Cup events.
At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Strenga and his team won a silver medal in the four-man event, making history as the first Latvian bobsledders to medal at the Olympics.
Continued Excellence
2014-PresentSince 2014, Strenga has continued to excel in the sport, winning multiple national championships and medals at various European and World Cup events. He has established himself as one of the top brakemen in the world and continues to represent Latvia with distinction.
