Steve Mesler: Olympian and Bobsled Champion

Early Life and Athletic Beginnings

Steve Mesler, born in Buffalo, New York, embraced sports from a young age, excelling in hockey and football. His athleticism led him to the University of Florida on a track and field scholarship, where he earned a degree in Exercise and Sports Science in 2000.

Transition to Bobsledding

After graduating, Mesler joined the U.S. Bobsled & Skeleton Federation (USBSF) in 2001. Despite the initial challenges, he made his national team debut the following season. In the 2002-2003 campaign, he served as an alternate for the Salt Lake City Olympics.

Olympic Success

Mesler's Olympic debut came in Turin in 2006, where he finished seventh in the four-man bobsled event. After four years with the team of Todd Hays, he joined Steve Holcomb's crew, known as the "Night Train." As the brakeman, Mesler was responsible for balancing and controlling the sled's speed.

In 2009, he piloted the "Night Train" to gold at the World Championships in Lake Placid, breaking a 50-year drought for the United States. The team also captured the World Cup title that season, their first in 17 years.
