Biography of Janusz River
Janusz River, an Italian of Russian-Polish descent, is a traveler and millionaire. He was born in Italy and had a successful career as a football manager and film producer. However, one day he grew tired of civilization and had the grand idea of embarking on a journey around the world. River went to a shop that sold mountain bikes and bought himself an inexpensive one, which he still uses today. Since then, he has traveled through hundreds of countries, unaffected by the lack of comfort and amenities of civilization that he had in his previous life.
Traveling the North Caucasus
One of the most notable journeys of River was his trip to the North Caucasus, which began in late May 2009 from the Rostov region. He traveled through the Krasnodar Krai, Adygea, Karachay-Cherkessia, Kabardino-Balkaria, North Ossetia, Ingushetia, Chechnya, and Dagestan. River prefers small towns over big cities and rural roads over federal highways. When asked about the dangers that a lone traveler may encounter in the not always peaceful Caucasus region, River laughs and says that he came to the North Caucasus to die as an old man. He asks the militants for food and permission to stay with them until the end of his life, and then they would let him go. River, who speaks twelve languages, is sure to find a way to communicate with different people during his travels.
A Life on Two Wheels
River's daily material expenses amount to only three dollars a day, and he carries the thirty-five kilograms of necessary items for his life on two wheels attached to the bike's luggage rack. Although River does not feel a strong connection to any nationality, he considers himself a citizen of the world. He does not promote a healthy lifestyle but simply lives, pedals, and enjoys each new day and the opportunity to meet new people and try mysterious national dishes. River is a passionate gourmet.
Future Plans
River's final destination for his tour is the 2012 Olympic Games in London. His boldest plan is to cycle from Volgograd to Berlin to commemorate the anniversary of Victory Day. River sees himself as one of the many individuals who have embarked on a journey not to conquer the world, but to simply see it, show goodwill, and learn about people whom he would never know by following his daily routine.
At seventy-four years old, River is not an old man and will never become one as long as he maintains his interest in living, exploring, and not surrendering to the circumstances. While he may have money, he finds happiness in other aspects of life.
