Jarkko Nieminen
Early Life and CareerJarkko Nieminen (born July 23, 1981) is a Finnish professional tennis player. Standing at 185 cm (6 ft 1 in) tall and weighing 78 kg (172 lb), he began his career in 2000 as a left-handed player with a two-handed backhand. Coached by Jan de Witt, Nieminen has won the US Open Boys' Singles title in 1999.
Grand Slam Successes
Nieminen has reached the quarterfinals of three out of the four Grand Slam tournaments. On the US Open in 2005, he defeated Karol Beck, Bjorn Phau, Max Mirnyi, and Fernando Verdasco before losing to Lleyton Hewitt in the quarterfinals. In 2006, he reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, where he fell to eventual runner-up Rafael Nadal. He repeated this feat at the Australian Open in 2008, again losing to Nadal in the quarterfinals.
ATP Titles and Finals
Nieminen has won one ATP singles title in Auckland in 2006, defeating Mario Ančić in the final. He has reached a further nine ATP finals, including two in 2002 (Estoril and Mallorca), another in 2003 (Munich), two in 2006 (Stockholm and Basel), one in 2008 (Adelaide), one in 2009 (Sydney), and one in 2010 (Bangkok).
Doubles Success
In doubles, Nieminen won his first title in Mumbai in 2007 with Robert Lindstedt. He has won a total of two ATP doubles titles, including the one in Gstaad in 2009 with Johan Brunström. He also reached the semifinals of the 2009 Australian Open in doubles with Michael Kohlmann.
Other Notable Achievements
Nieminen made his Olympic debut at the 2004 Athens Games and participated again in Beijing in 2008. He has also served in the Finnish army and is fluent in Finnish, Swedish, and English. Additionally, he enjoys playing hockey, badminton, and football.
