Early Life and Marriage

Jarmila Hašková, née Mayerová, was born into a family of sculptors in Prague. In 1905, she met Jaroslav Hašek, a writer and journalist. Their relationship faced opposition from her parents, who disapproved of Hašek's lifestyle.

Despite their disapproval, the couple married in May 1910. However, their marriage was far from harmonious. Jarmila struggled to accept Hašek's frequent absences and excessive partying. Her parents urged her to divorce him.

Birth of a Son and Separation

On April 20, 1912, the couple welcomed their son, Richard. However, the same year marked their separation. Despite the separation, their divorce was never officially finalized.

Hašek's Absence and Rumors of Death

When Hašek was captured by the Russians during World War I and presumed dead by some Czech newspapers, Jarmila, still bitter towards her former husband, informed her son that his father had perished.

Hašek's Return and Reconcilliation

Upon Hašek's return from Russia in 1920, Jarmila initially resisted his attempts to reunite with their son. At their first meeting, she introduced Hašek to Richard as a publisher acquaintance.

However, her attitude towards her ex-husband eventually softened. After Hašek's untimely death, Jarmila wrote a piece titled "Profile of a Dead Friend" in his memory.

Literary Career

Jarmila Hašková authored humorous short stories, novels, and children's books. She also wrote memoirs about her relationship with Hašek.
