Early Life and CareerJarome Iginla was born in Edmonton in 1977 to parents Elvis Iginla and Susan Schuchard. His father, originally from Nigeria, was a lawyer who immigrated to Canada at the age of 18. His mother, an American, moved to Canada from Oregon. Iginla grew up with his mother, grandmother, and grandfather after his parents separated when he was one year old. Despite the divorce, Iginla maintained a good relationship with both of his parents. It was his grandfather who introduced him to sports at a young age, and Iginla excelled in both baseball and hockey. Eventually, he chose to pursue a career in hockey after being inspired by the success of the Edmonton Oilers and their dark-skinned goalie, Grant Fuhr.
In his youth, Iginla played for the AMHL's St. Albert Raiders, impressing with his skills and scoring 87 points in a season. Alongside his athletic pursuits, Iginla also had a passion for music and played the piano and sang in various children's music festivals.
NHL Career
Iginla began his NHL career with the Calgary Flames after being drafted 11th overall by the Dallas Stars in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft and later traded to Calgary.
