Early Career at Leyton Orient
Demetriou began his football journey at English club Leyton Orient. He inked his first professional contract with the team in July 2006. His league debut came in November 2006 as a substitute against Yeovil Town, resulting in a 0-0 draw. Demetriou played 24 games in all competitions that season, primarily as a substitute.
Breakthrough Season and Recognition
The 2007/08 season proved more successful for Demetriou. Manager Martin Ling gave him more playing time, allowing him to showcase his abilities. Despite Leyton Orient's struggles in the 2008/09 season, Demetriou's performances impressed, attracting interest from Plymouth Argyle and Charlton Athletic. However, he publicly expressed his desire to remain with the club and was voted Orient's Player of the Year.
Transfer to AEK Larnaca
On June 2, 2010, Demetriou officially joined AEK Larnaca for an undisclosed fee. The move was driven by his desire to secure regular playing time with the Cyprus national team. He expressed sadness at leaving Leyton Orient but emphasized the need to progress for international selection.
Stints at Anorthosis and Walsall
On June 28, 2013, Demetriou signed a two-year contract with Anorthosis, with an option for an additional year. On July 1, 2015, he confirmed his move to Walsall for an undisclosed sum.
Transfer to Southend United
On June 22, 2016, Demetriou joined Southend United after passing a medical. He turned down a contract extension offer from Walsall and declined a possible transfer to Portsmouth.
International Career
Demetriou's international debut came on February 10, 2009, as a substitute against Serbia. He played his first full match on February 11 against Slovakia, assisting in two goals and securing a 3-2 victory. Demetriou was named Man of the Match. On October 10, 2015, he scored his first international goal against Israel during the Euro 2016 qualifying stage, helping Cyprus win 2-1.
