Born in Austria to Bosnian Croatian parents, Mateo Kovacic embarked on his football journey at LASK Linz. His exceptional talent drew attention from renowned clubs like Ajax, Stuttgart, Bayern Munich, and Juventus. However, his family opted to return to Zagreb, where he joined the illustrious Dinamo Zagreb academy.
Early Promise at Dinamo Zagreb
In 2009, while playing for Dinamo Zagreb's youth team, Kovacic suffered a serious leg fracture. After an arduous year of rehabilitation, he triumphantly returned to the field on May 31, 2010. Impressing coach Vahid Halilhodzic, he began training with the first team but remained a regular in the youth ranks. Scouts from Arsenal witnessed his brilliance in November.
On November 20, 2010, Kovacic made his senior debut for Dinamo Zagreb, becoming the youngest goalscorer in Croatian league history. His astonishing performance earned him comparisons to football icons such as Wayne Rooney, Diego Maradona, and Lionel Messi.
