Career
Segel gained recognition in the early 1990s when he was nineteen years old after appearing in the comedy series "Freaks and Geeks" as the eccentric character Nick Andopolis. He also wrote a song for his character, which Nick sang to the main heroine Lindsey in one of the episodes. Segel dated the actress who played Lindsey, Linda Cardellini, for several years after the series ended. However, they eventually broke up, and the rumor that she left him because he had gained weight was later proven false.
From 2004 to 2005, Segel appeared in "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" as Neil Jensen, and later, in the series "Undeclared" as Eric. He currently stars in the sitcom "How I Met Your Mother" as Marshall Eriksen. Segel made his film debut in 1998 in "Dead Man on Campus" and "SLC Punk!". In 2002, he portrayed the protagonist, Sam, in the comedy "Slackers," and in 2005, he appeared in the film "The Good Humor Man". In 2007, he gained recognition for his role in the comedy film "Knocked Up," directed by Judd Apatow, who produced "Freaks and Geeks." In 2008, Segel starred in the romantic comedy "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," where he also wrote the screenplay himself. The film was directed by Nicholas Stoller and also featured Kristen Bell, Mila Kunis, and Bill Hader. His most recent film, titled "I Love You, Man," was released on March 20, 2009.
Segel and Nicholas Stoller signed a contract with Disney to write the screenplay for another Muppet film. Due to his childhood love for puppet shows, Segel was excited to work on the Disney project. In the film "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," Segel's character wrote a screenplay for a musical and puppet show called "Dracula." He admitted that some situations in the film were based on his personal experiences, including the puppet performance and being naked during a breakup.
In addition to his acting career, Segel has also appeared in films such as "Can't Hardly Wait" in 1998, "11:14" in 2003 as Leon, "Goodbye, Benjamin" in 2006 as Theodore Everest, and "Gulliver's Travels" in 2010 as Horatio, collaborating with director Rob Letterman. Amanda Peet, Emily Blunt, and Jack Black also starred in the film. In the same year, Segel voiced the character Vector in the film "Despicable Me." From 2001 to 2006, he was involved in the filming of the television series "Alias".
Personal Life
Apart from his career, Segel is passionate about playing the piano and enjoys visiting Disneyland. He mostly listens to rock music and reggae. He has a younger sister named Eliston and an older brother named Adam. His father, Alvin, works as a lawyer, and his mother, Jill, is a homemaker.
Regarding his role in the film "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," Segel stated that he got the role because the creators of the film, Carter Bays and Greg Thomas, were avid fans of "Freaks and Geeks," in which Segel previously starred. He also mentioned in interviews that during the filming of the movie in 2008, he drank a lot to cope with the pressure. Despite his nervousness, he did not want to date anyone at that time, fearing that they would be disappointed by his appearance.
In his interviews, Segel has discussed the perception of nudity in films, stating that when a woman appears naked on screen, it immediately arouses men. However, for women, it is different. When they see a naked, slightly overweight man who is also crying, it becomes funny. He finds it strange how such a depiction can evoke both discomfort and laughter, and yet acknowledges the audience's response.
