Early Life and Influences

Jason Newsted was born in Battle Creek, Michigan, on March 4, 1963. Raised on a farm with his two brothers and sister, he was surrounded by music from his piano-teaching mother and his brothers' favorite heavy metal bands.

The Path to Metallica

Inspired by Gene Simmons and Black Sabbath, Newsted took up the bass guitar at the age of 9. He became a devoted fan of Metallica, idolizing Cliff Burton. After Burton's tragic death, Newsted joined his own band, Flotsam and Jetsam. Determined to join his idols, he auditioned for Metallica in 1986 and was chosen from over 50 candidates.

Metallica Years

Joining Metallica was a dream come true for Newsted. He played his first concert with the band at the Country Club in Los Angeles. His early years with the band were marked by challenges as the members grappled with the loss of Burton. Their first album together, "...And Justice for All," was criticized for its lack of bass presence.
