Early Life and Musical Roots
Jon Birgisson, better known as Jón "Jónsi" Þór Birgisson, was born in 1975 in Iceland. His unique Icelandic pronunciation stems from his native heritage. In the early 1990s, Jónsi emerged as the frontman of the grunge band Stoned and the rock group Bee Spiders. In 1995, Bee Spiders emerged victorious from the Músíktilraunir, a competition for young experimental music groups.
The Rise of Sigur Rós
Since 1994, Birgisson has led the experimental post-rock band Sigur Rós. Their debut album, "Von," was released in 1997 and was followed by four additional albums before the band's hiatus in 2010.
Solo Career and Collaborations
After Sigur Rós's hiatus, Jónsi embarked on a solo career. He has also collaborated with Alex Somers in the project Riceboy Sleeps, producing both ambient music and visual artwork. Their 2009 album, "Riceboy Sleeps," showcased Jónsi's ethereal vocals and layered arrangements.

Jónsi is openly gay and has a long-term partner in Alex Somers. He is often referred to as an "alien," due to his otherworldly vocal sounds. His falsetto is unique and enchanting, blending with natural sound collages, acoustic instruments, and string quartet passages to create a captivating and celestial musical experience.

Jónsi possesses a blind right eye and is a vegetarian. The "Riceboy Sleeps" album features the voice of the last known castrato singer, recorded on a phonograph at the beginning of the 20th century.
