Jackson Emmett Buell: Defying the Odds

Jackson Emmett Buell, born with a rare congenital defect called microhydranencephaly, has defied all odds and celebrated his first birthday. Despite doctors predicting that he would only live for a few days, Jackson, also known as "Jackson Strong," has amazed people across the United States with his resilience and will to live.

A Challenging Diagnosis

Jackson was born in Florida with a severely underdeveloped brain and skull. Approximately 4,859 infants in the United States have been diagnosed with this condition, but most of them do not survive. When Jackson's parents, Brittany and Brandon, learned about their son's devastating diagnosis, their world was shattered.

Brittany, now 27, recalled the heartbreak she felt when she learned that her son might not survive. She said, "My heart was breaking. Everything I had ever wanted was suddenly in jeopardy. I was not experiencing the joy that pregnancy brings; I had none of that."

A Difficult Decision

As devout Christians, Brittany and Brandon were given the option to terminate the pregnancy at 23 weeks. However, they made the decision to have faith and give their son a chance at life. Brandon expressed, "Who are we to decide? We were given this child, given this opportunity, and we had to listen to his voice." And so, Jackson was born on August 27, 2014, weighing only 1.8 kg.

A Journey of Strength

For several weeks, Jackson remained in the hospital under the care of neurosurgeons. Against all expectations, he was eventually allowed to go home. Brandon vividly remembers holding his son on the second day of his life, while doctors told him that Jackson would likely never walk or talk, that he would never show signs of hunger, and that he would be unable to hear or see. Yet, Jackson defied all these predictions.

A Mother's Love

Brittany cherishes every moment she spends with Jackson, as she is acutely aware that any day could be his last. She stated, "In the back of my mind, I never forget that. The realization that any day could be Jackson's last is always with me. I know that tomorrow, he simply might not be here anymore."

Despite the challenges, Brittany tries to remain positive most of the time. However, she admits that there is always a small part of her that grapples with the harsh reality of their situation. The Buell family has received tremendous support from friends and colleagues, who created a GoFundMe page to help cover their medical expenses. The campaign aims to raise approximately $58,000.

Today, Jackson continues to defy the odds and inspire people around the world with his incredible strength and spirit. His story serves as a reminder of the power of love, faith, and the will to fight for life, no matter the circumstances.
