Early Life and Education
Willard Mitt Romney was born on March 12, 1947, in Detroit, Michigan. His father, George Romney, was an automotive executive who later became governor of Michigan. Mitt attended Stanford University for two semesters before serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in France. Upon returning, he received a bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University in 1971 and a Juris Doctor and Master of Business Administration from Harvard Law School in 1975.
Business Career
After graduating from Harvard, Romney began his business career. In 1984, he co-founded Bain Capital, an investment firm that specialized in acquiring and managing struggling companies. Under Romney's leadership, Bain Capital grew into a multi-billion dollar enterprise.
Political Career
Inspired by his father, Romney entered politics. In 1994, he ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate against incumbent Democrat Ted Kennedy. He gained national recognition in 1999 when he was appointed to lead the organizing committee for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. His successful turnaround of the troubled games enhanced his reputation as an effective executive.
Governor of Massachusetts
In 2002, Romney was elected the 70th Governor of Massachusetts. During his tenure, he successfully implemented a universal healthcare law known as "Romneycare," which became a model for the Affordable Care Act. He also opposed the legalization of same-sex marriage, which was later overturned.
Presidential Campaign
After leaving office in 2007, Romney announced his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination. He ran as a social conservative, opposing abortion, same-sex marriage, embryonic stem cell research, and gun control. However, his Mormon faith and past liberal positions alienated some conservative voters.
Personal Life
Romney married Ann Davies in 1969. They have five adult sons: Taggart, Matthew, Joshua, Benjamin, and Craig. Ann Romney has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, which she manages with alternative therapies.
