Biography of Jay Livingston

Jay Livingston, whose real name was Jacob Harold Levison, was born in 1915 in McDonald, Pennsylvania. From a young age, he began learning to play the piano with the help of Harry Archer, a musician from Pittsburgh. After completing his education, Jay enrolled in the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.

Early Career

While studying at college, Livingston formed his first musical group. It was during this time that he met Ray Evans, his future partner and lifelong friend. In 1937, they recorded their first duet, but it was not until ten years later that they gained recognition for their work on the film "Easy Come, Easy Go."

Oscar-Winning Success

In 1949, Livingston and Evans received an Oscar for Best Song for their work on the film "The Paleface," directed by Norman McLeod. Their song "Mona Lisa," specifically written for the film "Captain Carey, U.S.A." also won an Academy Award in 1950. Following these successes, Livingston and Evans became perhaps the most famous composers in America.

Notable Works

In 1951, they worked on the soundtrack for the film "The Lemon Drop Kid," and in 1956, they released the composition "Whatever Will Be, Will Be (Que Sera, Sera)," which became the theme song for the film "The Man Who Knew Too Much" and won them another Oscar. The duo also worked on music for television series such as "Bonanza" and "Mr. Ed."

Recognition and Legacy

In 1958, Jay Livingston and his friend, along with the entire cast of the production "Oh, Captain!" were nominated for a Tony Award. Livingston and Evans were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1977. Their stars can also be found on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Personal Life and Death

Jay Livingston was married twice. His first marriage was to Lynne Gordon, with whom he had one child. They were together for over 40 years until her death in 1991. His second wife was Shirley Mitchell, and they were married until his death in late 2001. Jay Livingston passed away on October 17, 2001, at the age of 86. The memorial service took place at the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles, California.
