The Multifaceted Jay Manuel: Style Icon and Television Personality
Jay Manuel, a renowned Canadian stylist, makeup artist, photographer, and model, has gained prominence in recent years as the creative director and photographer on the popular reality television show "America's Next Top Model." Additionally, he hosted and served as the lead judge on the second and third seasons of the show's Canadian counterpart, "Canada's Next Top Model."
Early Life and Education
Born on August 14, 1972, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Jay Manuel's striking features are a result of his diverse ancestral heritage. His mother is of Czech and Italian descent, while his father, a native of South Africa, boasts Dutch and Malay ancestry. Jay grew up in Toronto, attended Dr. Norman Bethune Collegiate Institute high school, and graduated from York University, one of Canada's largest universities.
From Medicine to Makeup
Before venturing into the fashion industry, Manuel dabbled in pre-med courses and even studied opera, eventually working at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. However, he ultimately found his calling as a makeup artist, eventually working with supermodels such as Iman and Tyra Banks.
"America's Next Top Model" and Beyond
When Tyra Banks launched her reality show "America's Next Top Model" in 2003, she enlisted the services of Manuel as creative director and photographer. The show has since aired for 15 seasons and remains a popular staple of the reality television landscape. Alongside his friend and fellow "Top Model" judge and coach, the eccentric model and television personality J. Alexander, Manuel frequently appears on the television program "Fashion Police." Airing on E!: Entertainment Television the day after major entertainment award ceremonies, "Fashion Police" features host Debbie Matenopoulos and celebrity guests critiquing the fashion choices of stars on the red carpets of events such as the Academy Awards, the Grammys, the Golden Globes, and the Emmy Awards.
Manuel also hosts his own show, "Style Her Famous," on the Style Network. In September 2006, he launched his own cosmetics line, "Manuel Override," with the QVC corporation. He serves as Tyra Banks' personal makeup artist and frequently appears as himself on various television shows and series.
Personal Life and Legacy
An openly gay man, Manuel is known as "Mister Jay" on "America's Next Top Model," while J. Alexander earned the nickname "Miss J." His contributions to the fashion and entertainment industries have solidified his status as an influential style icon and a beloved television personality.
