Jayavarman V: The Khmer King
Early LifeJayavarman V was the son of King Rajendravarman II of the Khmer Empire. Scholars believe he survived a childhood illness under the care of his aunt, Yajnavarahi.
Reign and Military Victories
Upon ascending to the throne, Jayavarman V continued his father's policy of fighting against the Cham of Champa. He likely conquered them and extracted tribute.
Capital and Architectural Achievements
It is believed that Jayavarman V's capital, Jayendranagari, was located on the western shore of the East Baray. He is credited with the construction of the Phimeanakas temple and possibly the Ta Keo temple.
Education and Culture
Jayavarman V's reign is marked by a high level of education and cultural development. Inscriptions reveal the involvement of women in government positions, including the sophisticated and beautiful companions of the empire's statesmen. Indralakshmi and Yajnavarahi's sister, Jahnavi, played a role in the construction of the Banteay Srei temple.
Succession and Legacy
Jayavarman V died in 1001 without an heir. He was deified and posthumously named Paramasrivaloka. His nephew, Udayadityavarman I, succeeded him to the throne.
