Born in Canada, Jean Coutu is a well-educated individual who holds a degree from the University of Montreal. He was honored with an honorary doctorate for his academic achievements. In 1969, he opened his first pharmacy in East End Montreal, marking the beginning of his entrepreneurial journey.

In 1973, Coutu purchased a warehouse and initiated franchising operations, which eventually transformed his small retail pharmaceutical company into a global conglomerate. The Jean Coutu Group, as it is known today, has undergone several mergers with other organizations, making it one of the largest pharmacy structures in North America.

The Jean Coutu Group is currently headquartered in Quebec and has a growing number of branches and subsidiaries. With 268 subsidiaries across Canada, the company has expanded rapidly since 1999, becoming the second-fastest-growing retail seller of pharmaceutical products worldwide between 1999 and 2004.

In the mid-2004, Jean Coutu acquired over half of the Eckerd store chain, primarily located along the East Coast of the United States, and personally managed the purchased stores. The company markets its own products under the brand names Brooks Pharmacy in New England and Eckerd Pharmacy in the provincial areas of New York. They also conduct trading operations in the regions from southern Pennsylvania to Georgia.
