Early Life and Military Career

Jean Baptiste Eble was born on December 21, 1758, in Saint-Jean-de-Rohrbach, Moselle, France. In 1773, at the age of 15, he joined the artillery regiment as a privateer. By 1785, he had risen to the rank of 3rd Lieutenant.

With the outbreak of the French Revolution in 1789, Eble's career accelerated rapidly. By May 1792, he had become a Captain and served in the Ardennes and Northern armies from 1792 to 1795.

Rise Through the Ranks

On August 26, 1793, Eble was promoted to Battalion Commander of the 6th Artillery Regiment. Soon after, on September 29, he became a Brigadier General. He commanded the artillery of the Northern Army and participated in several key battles, including Ypres and Newport.

On November 21, 1794, Eble was appointed Inspector General of Artillery. He continued to serve in various artillery commands, including that of the Rhine-Moselle and Roman armies.

Napoleonic Wars

In 1805, Eble joined Napoleon's Grand Army and led the artillery of the 1st Corps under Marshal Jean Bernadotte. He later served as the Governor of Magdeburg and commanded the 3rd Westphalian Division in 1808.

In September 1808, Eble became the Minister of War for the Kingdom of Westphalia. He was promoted to Colonel-General of the Westphalian Guard in 1809 and Chamberlain of the Court in August of the same year.

Return to the Grand Army

In 1810, Eble was recalled to Paris and appointed to the Artillery Committee. He subsequently led the artillery of the Portuguese Army, participating in battles like Ciudad Rodrigo and Almeida.

In November 1811, he was appointed Commander of Artillery in Germany. In February 1812, he became the Chief Officer of Construction and Pontoons for the Grand Army.

Grand Army and Death

In 1812, Eble played a crucial role in the invasion of Russia. He oversaw the construction of three new bridges across the Neman River. On December 18, just days before his death, he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of Artillery for the Grand Army.

Jean Baptiste Eble died on December 31, 1812, in Königsberg, East Prussia. He was posthumously granted the rank of Division General and the title of Count.
