Early Life and Education

Jean-Joseph Dessolles was born in Auch, France, in 1767. He received a thorough education from his uncle and later attended military school.

Military Career

Dessolles entered military service in 1792 as an aide-de-camp. By 1797, he had earned the rank of general under Napoleon I. He served as the chief of staff to Jean Victor Moreau during the Italian campaign and distinguished himself in the campaigns against Austria, earning the rank of general of division. He participated in the Battle of Hohenlinden and the Battle of Novi.

Service in the Napoleonic Wars

During the Napoleonic Wars, Dessolles commanded a division in Spain and participated in the Peninsular War.

Return to France and Political Appointments

In 1814, Dessolles became commander-in-chief of the 1st Division of the French National Guard. After the restoration of Louis XVIII, he served as Prime Minister and opposed Napoleon's "Hundred Days."

Later Life and Death

Dessolles died in 1828.
