Early Life and Education

Tina Anselmi was born on March 25, 1927, in Castelfranco Veneto, Italy. Her father was a pharmacist's assistant who held socialist ideals and faced persecution from the fascist regime. Her mother and grandmother ran an inn. Anselmi completed her secondary education at the high school in her hometown and later attended the humanist lyceum (Istituto magistrale) in Bassano del Grappa.

Resistance Movement

On September 26, 1944, Anselmi and a group of students were forced by the fascists to witness the execution of 31 prisoners. This event sparked her decision to join the Resistance. She adopted the pseudonym "Gabriella" and became a liaison for the Cesare Battisti partisan brigade and later the Veneto regional headquarters of the Volunteer Corps of Freedom.

Political Career

After the war, Anselmi studied philology at the Sacred Heart University in Milan and became a primary school teacher. She became involved in trade unionism, holding positions in the textile and school teachers' unions. In 1948, she joined the Christian Democratic Party (DC).

Anselmi was elected to the Italian Chamber of Deputies in 1968 and served six terms. From 1974 to 1979, she held various ministerial posts, including Minister of Labor and Social Security and Minister of Health. She played a significant role in establishing the Italian National Health Service.

Investigation of the P-2 Masonic Lodge

In 1981, Anselmi led a parliamentary commission tasked with investigating the activities of the P-2 Masonic lodge. The commission's work concluded four years later.

Presidential Candidacy and Legacy

In 1992, Anselmi was put forward as a candidate for the Italian presidency at the initiative of the satirical weekly magazine Cuore and supported by the Network party.

On June 2, 2016, a postage stamp featuring Anselmi's image was issued, making her the first living statesperson to receive this honor.

Awards and Recognition

Anselmi was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 1998. Her contributions to Italy and her tireless efforts in the Resistance movement continue to be remembered and celebrated.
