French Algologist and Zoologist
Early Life and Education:In 1805, Jean Vincent Félix Lamouroux, a French algologist and zoologist, successfully defended his dissertation.
Arrival in Paris and Academic Career:
In 1807, Lamouroux relocated to Paris and became an elected member of the French Academy of Sciences. Beginning in 1808, he held the professorship of natural history in Caen.
Contributions to Algology:
Lamouroux made significant contributions to algology, the study of algae. By 1824, he had identified and classified 590 species of algae, greatly surpassing the 342 species identified by H.C. Lyngbye in 1819.
Systematic Classification of Algae:
Lamouroux developed a comprehensive system for classifying algae, although he made the erroneous decision to categorize Corallinaceae, a group of red algae, as animals (coral polyps). This classification error was later corrected by Schwager, Kützing, and Decaisne.
