Biography of Jean Ovide Decroly
Jean Ovide Decroly was a Belgian educator, psychologist, and physician. He was born on July 23, 1871, in the city of Renaix, Belgium. Decroly completed his studies at the Brussels Institute in 1901 before opening the "Institute for Mentally Challenged Children." In 1907, he established the "School of Life through Life" for normal children. From 1920, he served as a professor of hygiene and therapeutic pedagogy at the University of Brussels.
Philosophy and Contributions
Decroly aimed to create a connection between various sciences, bringing them together in one central focus - the child. He believed that educational activities should facilitate a child's self-awareness, understanding of their environment, and the realization of their ideals, goals, and desires. Decroly advocated for a non-political and non-class-based approach to education, with the primary objective being the education of children for life, through life.
Decroly emphasized the importance of intellectual, moral, and physical education. He believed that education should be tailored to each child's inclinations, while also preparing them for adult life. The child, their inner world, needs, interests, and abilities, were at the center of the educational process. Decroly's programs focused on the concentration of interests, with themes such as "The Child and their Body" and "The Child and the Universe."
Decroly viewed the educator as a helper and consultant, rather than an authoritarian figure. His educational approach involved organizing children's activities around their interests and needs, through the use of educational complexes called "centers of interest." These centers allowed children to engage in observation, reading, writing, drawing, sculpting, and other activities related to their chosen theme. Decroly also developed a system of didactic games to enhance sensory development, considering play as a joyful and creative activity. Furthermore, he proposed systems of classification and collecting to promote cognitive development.
Decroly was against formalism in teaching and education, advocating for a curriculum that is closely connected to real-life experiences. He also criticized rote learning, ignoring children's interests, and the detachment of schools from life.
Jean Ovide Decroly's innovative approach to education revolutionized pedagogy and continues to influence educational practices worldwide. His emphasis on child-centered learning and the integration of various disciplines remains significant in contemporary education.
