Biography of Jeff Healey
Jeff Healey was a Canadian musician, jazz and blues-rock singer, guitarist, and trumpeter. He was born Norman Jeffery Healey on March 25, 1966, in Toronto, Canada. Despite facing numerous challenges in his life, Jeff Healey became a talented and influential musician.
Early Life and Education
At the age of 8 months, Jeff Healey was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, a rare form of eye cancer. He attended a special school and later enrolled in Etobicoke Collegiate Institute. He began playing the guitar at the age of three, showcasing his musical talent from a young age.
Music Career
In 1983, Jeff Healey formed the band "Blue Direction" with drummer Tom Stephen and bassist Joe Rockman. The band recorded only one single before disbanding. However, it was in 1985 that Healey's musical career truly took off. Renowned guitarist Albert Collins invited nineteen-year-old Healey to perform with him in a Toronto club. Collins was so impressed by the young blind guitarist that he asked him to play again, this time alongside blues legends Stevie Ray Vaughan and B.B. King.
In 1988, Jeff Healey formed the "Jeff Healey Band" and released the album "See the Light," which went on to achieve platinum status in the United States. The band's hit song "Angel Eyes" reached the fifth spot on the UK charts, and their song "Hideaway" was nominated for a Grammy award.
Healey gained even more popularity after his appearance in the film "Road House" (1989), where he played himself. The character played by Patrick Swayze best reflects Healey's musical talent, saying, "You play pretty good for a blind white boy!"
Personal Life and Legacy
In his late thirties, Healey was diagnosed with cancer in his leg. However, he continued to work, recording music and touring. Some of his most well-known songs include "Full Circle," "I Think I Love You Too Much," "How Long Can a Man Be Strong," and "Heart of an Angel."
In 2008, Healey's health deteriorated further when he was diagnosed with lung cancer. Sadly, he passed away on March 2, 2008, just three weeks before his forty-fifth birthday and the release of his album "Mess of Blues." Healey left behind his wife and two children, a thirteen-year-old son and a three-year-old daughter.
