Jeff Horton - The Surfer who Fought off a Shark
Jeff Horton, a 25-year-old surfer, made headlines around the world in the fall of 2013 when he successfully fought off a shark attack. It was later revealed that Horton was a former boxer, and it was his boxing skills that helped him in his battle against the fearsome predator. Some called him lucky, others called him brave, but Horton admitted to journalists later on that he was terrified during the encounter with the shark. However, fear did not stop him from delivering a barrage of punches to the shark, forcing the predator to retreat.

A Close Call at the Hawaiian Island of Kauai
The incident took place off the coast of the Hawaiian island of Kauai, a popular destination for surfers from all over the world. Besides the beautiful waves, the shores of Kauai are also known for their predators - sharks that have attacked wave riders on multiple occasions. When Horton spotted the shark, it was already too close, and in the next moment, the predator knocked him off his board. Finding himself in the water, Jeff frantically began swinging his arms, but it took him some time to strike the shark. Meanwhile, the shark started to attack Horton, lunging at him with its jaws wide open.

A Boxer's Instincts Save the Day
Jeff, a former boxer, believed that if he managed to land one good punch on the shark, he would have a chance of survival. He aimed for the shark's snout, but the water softened the blows, and it was incredibly hard to aim accurately in the chaos of the underwater struggle. Nevertheless, Jeff managed to land one powerful blow - a solid hit right in the shark's eye. While the stunned predator was recovering, Jeff quickly climbed back onto his board and paddled towards the shore with all his might. Once on the beach, a shaken Horton noticed a massive bite mark on his board. If those giant jaws had closed around his limbs, it is unlikely he would have made it out of the water alive.

A Second Chance at Life
As Jeff recounted his harrowing story on the beach, one of the onlookers handed him a "reward" of $50 and told him to go celebrate his second birth. When asked if he planned to continue surfing, Jeff confidently answered in the affirmative. However, he did choose to switch beaches. He decided to hang his board, marked with the terrifying shark bite, on the wall of his home, while his body only bore a few scratches from the encounter with the formidable predator.
