A Rare Condition: Localized Gigantism
Localized gigantism is caused by an overproduction of growth hormone by the pituitary gland, located in the brain. This hormone stimulates the liver to produce a second hormone that promotes bone and muscle growth.
Acromegaly: Excessive Growth Hormone
Acromegaly occurs when the body produces too much growth hormone, leading to excessive tissue growth. It is typically caused by a benign tumor in the pituitary gland.
Prevalence and Symptoms
Acromegaly affects an estimated 4-13 out of every 100,000 people and can manifest at any age, although it is often diagnosed by the age of 40. Common signs include enlarged facial features, a thickened tongue, unusual height, and disproportionate limbs.
