Mia Jamal: The Two-Headed Baby of Bangladesh
Mia Jamal, the father of a baby girl born with two heads in Bangladesh, was filled with awe and fear when he saw his newborn daughter. Mia's daughter, born through a cesarean section in the district of Brahmanbaria, is currently in the intensive care unit of the largest hospital in Bangladesh, located in the city of Dhaka. Medical professionals are working to address her breathing difficulties.
Although Mia's daughter has two fully formed heads, she shares one body and one set of vital organs. Mia expressed his gratitude to Allah for the well-being of his daughter and her mother during an interview. The hospital's owner, Abu Kawsar, stated that apart from the presence of two heads, the newborn's organs and limbs are normal, just like any other baby.
A Rare Anomaly
Experts are considering the possibility that the baby may have a rare condition known as dicephalic parapagus. This extremely rare form of conjoined twins results in only one body for two individuals. According to the "Journal of Family and Reproductive Health," the chances of a child being born with this anomaly are 1 in 50,000 to 100,000. Statistics show that in 60% of cases, children with dicephalic parapagus are stillborn or die shortly after birth.
The Miracle Baby's Popularity
News of the "miracle baby" spread quickly, and thousands of people flocked to the hospital in Brahmanbaria, approximately 75 km east of Dhaka. In such countries as Bangladesh and India, children born with physical abnormalities were traditionally regarded as living gods. Abu Kawsar mentioned that the entire town rushed to the hospital, including people from neighboring villages. Moving the baby to Dhaka was a wise decision as it would have been challenging to control the crowd otherwise.
A Father's Worry
Mia, a low-wage agricultural worker, expressed his concern about being able to provide proper care for his daughter. He lamented the fact that she was born into a poor family, saying, "I feel sad for her. She was born into a poor person's family. I didn't even have the money for her mother's proper treatment."
Global Cases of Two-Headed Babies
The occurrence of twins with two heads is primarily seen in Southwest Asia and Africa. In the past year, a two-headed baby was born to a mother in India who was too poor to undergo an ultrasound during her pregnancy. Unfortunately, the infants died after just 20 days. Another case involved a baby named Kiron, who was born with two heads in 2008 but later passed away.
However, there have also been several cases in the Western world. In July 2009, Lisa Chamberlain from Portsmouth gave birth to conjoined twins Joshua and Jaden, who shared one body. Joshua was stillborn, while Jaden lived for 32 minutes before passing away in his mother's arms. The most well-known case of dicephalic parapagus twins is Abigail and Brittany Hensel from the United States, who have been featured on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and various documentaries.
