Early Life and Education
Jeff Radebe was born on February 18, 1953. He graduated from the University of Zululand in South Africa. He also studied international law in Karl-Marx-Stadt, Germany (now Chemnitz).
Anti-Apartheid Activism
In 1976, Radebe joined the African National Congress (ANC), a movement fighting against apartheid. At the ANC's behest, he left South Africa and worked as a journalist in Tanzania and later in the ANC's international department in Zambia.
Exile and Imprisonment
In Lesotho, Radebe established underground structures for transporting activists into South Africa. During a secret mission, he was arrested in 1986 and sentenced to 10 years in prison. He was held at Robben Island, the same prison where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned.
Post-Apartheid Career
After the ANC's victory in the 1994 elections, Radebe was appointed Minister of Public Works. In 1999, he became Minister of State Enterprises. He has served in this role ever since.
